I was originally a Debian man, but when I got my current laptop I discovered that it wouldn't stay up for more than 2-3 days before something strange would cause it to hard lock.
I'm pretty good at troubleshooting problems but I couldn't figure it out.
I decided to give gentoo a try and after a few days of fear and confusion at the sheer potential of the distro I quickly learned to love it.
As for the increased speed everyone goes on about, I haven't seen it, but I suppose it's mostly noticed when doing long processor-intensive activities.
